Il North American B-25 Mitchell fu probabilmente uno dei migliori bombardieri medi della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Il primo volo del bimotore della North American avvenne nel 1939. Spinto da due motori Wright R-2600 Cyclone da 1.750 CV si caratterizzava per una straordinaria flessibilità operativa. Prese il soprannome di “Mitchell” in onore del generale Billy Mitchell considerato, a tutti gli effetti, il padre dell’ U.S. Air Force. Dalle prime versioni, utilizzate per il compito principale di bombardiere medio a volo livellato, vennero progressivamente sviluppare e realizzare ulteriori varianti. In particolare, a seguito del bisogno di un velivolo d’attacco al suolo e di supporto ravvicinato, venne realizzato il B-25G. A differenza delle versioni da bombardamento tradizionale caratterizzate dal muso anteriore trasparente, il B-25G era dotato di un muso chiuso in cui erano inserire due mitragliatrici di calibro 0,50 e un pesante cannone da 75mm che ne faceva un vero e proprio “pezzo di artiglieria volante”.

The first flight of the twin-engine North American plane was done in 1939. Powered by two 1750 HP Wright R-2600 Cyclone engines, the B-25 was characterized by an extraordinary operational flexibility. It took its nickname in honor of General Billy Mitchell considered, in effect, the father and the founder of United States Air Force. From the first versions, used for the main task of medium bomber in level flight, were progressively develop and implement further variations. In particular, following the specific need for a ground attack and close support aircraft, was made the B-25G. It was equipped with a closed nose, instead of the transparent one, with two .50 machine-guns and an heavy 75mm cannon inside which made it a real “”piece of flying artillery”
