Mustang and eja are also called "mestengos". It comes from a Spanish word that means "wild, wanderer". They were originally domesticated horses that the Spanish brought to America by ship in the 16th century and that escaped in America. Because they found plenty of food in the fertile pastures and had few natural enemies, their numbers increased rapidly. Wild Mustangs still roam the countryside today. They are led by a brave herd stallion who protects his herd and is usually the father of all the foals.
